Reports that Pope Francis wanted to go to El Salvador to canonize Oscar Romero are false

Update: Reports that Pope Francis wanted to go to El Salvador for the possible canonization of Oscar Romero are false. The reports were sourced to a Facebook page under the name of Cardenal Gregorio Rosa Chávez. Cardinal Chavez has since said that he does not have any social media accounts.

 

 

The post from the false Facebook account read:

The false post came just days after Archbishop Vincenzo Paglia, the official promoter of Romero’s cause, said in a homily in London on Aug. 12 that he hopes that archbishop’s canonization will take place within the year.

The story broke in the Italian news network ANSA. Other outlets also reported that the pope will go to El Salvador to canonize Romero, but the Vatican did not confirm the trip.
